    Background of Ceylon traditional masks
Sri Lanka, known for its prosperous culture and unique traditions, comes with a history of over 2000 years. Out of these various traditions, one of the most famous is the traditional masks. Mask carving is a local tradition at the southern coastal region and craftsmanship has been passed from generations within the same families. The local masks can be divided into several categories depending on their uses. Some masks are used during ancestor worship, certain spiritual rituals and healing ceremonies. There are masks that are related to hunting, fertility, bring in prosperity and etc.
Out of these masks, the followings were found to be prominent.
    Raksha Mask
    :
    Used to perform
    Raksha
    (devil) dances in
    Kolam Maduwa
. According to ancient chronicles, Sri Lanka was earlier ruled by a race of
    Rakshasas
    (devils) :
whose king was Ravana of the legend Ramayana. These
    Rakshasas
were able to assume various forms which now the masks depict. There are 24 forms of
    Rakshasas
but only a few are performed in Kolam dance. These masks include the cobra mask, the mask of a bird and the mask of the demon of death.
    Sanni Mask
    :
These were used to treat illnesses while there are 18 types of sanni masks
    Kolam Mask
    :
This type was used mainly in dramas while popular kolam masks are Lenchina and Jasaya.
These masks are nearly entirely made out of a light, durable, soft wood called
    kadura
, which is smoke-dried before the mask is carved.
